Former CEO of the Beribit crypto exchange Roman Tsaregorodtsev withdrew about $4 million in client funds and disappeared

Former CEO of the Beribit crypto exchange Roman Tsaregorodtsev is suspected of misappropriating client funds from the service. This was reported by a company employee who requested anonymity.

Although media outlets widely reported that Beribit had been acquired by Sergey Kurchenko in the summer of 2023, the platform’s actual management remained with the previous team for some time. According to sources, systematic misappropriation of client funds began during this period — even before access to the platform’s accounts was transferred to the new owners.

After searches related to the Crocus City case, the new team was forced to demand access to all Beribit accounts. Once access was obtained and an audit conducted, a so-called “cash gap” of more than 400 million rubles was discovered. Clients were informed of the audit results on April 27 via the exchange’s Telegram channel.

At the same time, Tsaregorodtsev has rarely appeared publicly as Beribit’s head. The only confirmation of his role appeared in an announcement for the business event “Satoshkin,” held on September 23, 2023, in Moscow, where he was listed as the exchange’s CEO.

This contradicts the widely circulated media version that by September 2023 Beribit was already controlled by Kurchenko’s team. The event poster effectively indicates that the service was still being managed by Tsaregorodtsev at that time.

On May 8, the Telegram channel BRIEF was the first to publicly highlight Tsaregorodtsev’s role in the scandal involving defrauded Beribit clients and published a link to the event announcement. However, within a day of the publication, the event poster was removed from the organizer “Satoshkin’s” channel.

Tsaregorodtsev’s current whereabouts are now being established.
